History of Geek Pride

Founded in 2012 to honour Alan Turing and to recognise his achievements and centenarian, Geek Pride now acts as an annual legacy event to celebrate both his LGBT and geek identity.

2012 saw the first entry of Geek Pride in the Manchester Pride parade, with over 20 members turning up on the day to take part in the parade and many more supporting us on social networks. Over a series of meetups throughout July and August, Geek Pride members created placards, banners and flags to display throughout the parade.

Anyone who wants to get involved is more than welcome, whatever their background or sexuality.

From students, professionals and political party leaders, Geek Pride has had a wide range of participants in the past and we want to continue to be as inclusive as possible, from the Manchester geek community and beyond. In fact, we positively encourage people who may not have previously identified with Pride events to give it a go and join in this opportunity to honour the memory of Alan Turing and celebrate geek culture.

See more photos from our previous events on our Facebook page.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Geek Pride?

Geek Pride is a chance for you to celebrate who you are and what you love! Whatever kind of geek you are and whatever your background, come and be a part of the Pride parade in Manchester this bank holiday weekend.

  • Wait... what exactly is a geek?

Good question! A geek is anyone who simply has a passion for something, probably quite niche! For example, you could be a classic sci-fi geek or maybe a bike geek or a sports geek. Or perhaps you just love technology or participating in cosplay - anything goes. Usually, we're a bit outside the mainstream but that's what makes us interesting.

  • What is Manchester Pride?

The Manchester Pride Festival is the largest of the City's Staple Calendar events and has continually attracted a crowd of over 200,000 people throughout the City Centre, and a daily audience of over 42,000 people have attended the Big Weekend. Since 2003, Manchester Pride has raised a staggering £1million for charity; which has been distributed to hundreds of LGBT and HIV groups and charities and benefited a wide range of diverse projects.

  • Is Geek Pride for everyone? Isn't Pride just for LGBT people?

Geek Pride is definitely for everyone - especially if you've never identified or wanted to be involved in anything Pride related. It's because Pride is for everyone and we should be represented.

  • What is the Pride Parade?

The Pride Parade is a free event that goes through the centre of Manchester. Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate in the Geek Pride part of the Parade and you don’t need a ticket for Manchester Pride to do so.

  • I don't have a ticket for Pride

The Manchester Pride Parade is a free event and you don’t need a ticket to get involved with Geek Pride. If you wish to attend the Manchester Pride festival, you will need a ticket for the event.

  • What will Geek Pride look like?

Geek Pride is a walking group which forms part of the Manchester Pride parade. As for what we'll look like, that's up to you! We geeks are a diverse group and we want everyone to celebrate who they are and what they love. Throughout the initial meetups, we'll come up with ideas and options to make our walking entry look awesome!

  • How do I get Involved?

It's simple. Fill out the quick form above in the "Get Involved" section and we'll be in touch with details about the meetups and socials.
